Northampton Judo Club has evolved over the years.
Timken Judo Club and Northampton YMCA joined together over 10 years ago and used the Timken sports hall as the Dojo for
all sessions. Timken Judo club goes back nearly 60 years and is one of the oldest clubs in England. Northampton YMCA
was formed in 1982 and both clubs were successful in there own right. Following the closure of the Timken Factory 5 years
ago the club was forced to seek new facilities which were the Baptist church hall in Kingsthorpe on Mondays and St. Lukes
school in Duston on Wednesdays. Last year we were forced to drop Timken from our name so we became quite simply Northampton
Judo Club.
(This is not to be confused with the cub which practiced at the old Unitairian Church which unfortunately had to close
2 years ago).
As far as we know our club now is the last remaining club in town. Where 25 years ago older judoka may remeber Monks
Park, Spencer, Northampton, Timken and the YMCA. All good clubs producing many great players in there own right. At one time
the old Northampton club must have been one of the strongest in the country.
Anyone who has dropped out of Judo but remembers these days get in touch.
At this stage of the clubs development I think it fitting that players connected with clubs mentioned above are now actively
involved in the club in its present form. Nick and Clive from the old Northampton club, Nick who also run Monks Park. Brian,
Clive and Dave from the YMCA who went on to Timken. Everyone then joined up at the new dojo at Carlesburg. Without doubt Northampton
Judo is doing well.
As stated above we have now moved on to Carlesburg Social Club which is our Dojo for both nights. (Directions on
home page). Which appears to be a great move. Everybody is welcome.
